Plants talk #14
You are now listening to the Green Blog of Phuc Khang Corporation – The pioneer Green Building Developer in Vietnam. In this broadcast, we would like to tell you a story named “PLANTS TALK”.
“There is not a single cloud in the sky and the sun is shining brightly. Today may be a good day. We will be selected to freshen homes up. We are tiny pot plants which serve important roles, revitalizing monotonous homes.” Parlor Palm hadn’t finished before other plants such as Peace Lily, Aloe Vera and Spider Plant agreed. “Definitely”
But, both Pachira Aquatica and Aroid Palm gave a challenging look, showing no care. Pachira Aquatica pouted: “Hey Parlor Palm, you have been in this shop for ages. Why aren’t you picked” Aroid Palm added: “People grow plants to build up feng shui, attracting luck and prosperity such as gold and money. Green decoration or air purification is just an add-on, am I right Mr Lucky Bamboo?”
Lucky Bamboo hadn’t replied yet, Snake Plant did instead. “I tell you this, Pachira Aquatica and Aroid Palm, you two are way wrong. I do agree that you are often picked thanks to your names, but you have no right to mock at Parlor Palm and look down on us.” Without waiting for Pachira Aquatica and Aroid Palm to respond, Snake Plant continued: “We all respect Mr Parlor Palm because he purified the air so well. The boss always says that Mr Parlor Palm is considered “an effective ammonia purifier” – the main element in bleach and dye, let alone the fact that Parlor Plam is easily grown, even in the shade for a very long time, without much care or fertilizers.”
That Snake Plant defended Parlor Palm angered Aroid Palm: “Listen, ugly Snake Plant, do you really think that purifying the air and growing well in the shade are cool? So can we. Additionally, we please the owners with our names. We are picked because we are thought to bring luck, prosperity, and fortune, do you understand? What on earth can a little Snake Plant do?”
Snake Plant didn’t give up: “The boss often advertises us as “plants especially for bedrooms” because we were born with the ability to produce oxygen, help purify the air at night, while other plants cannot. We don’t need too much light and water, so we can be placed at any corner in the home.”
Pachira Aquatica didn’t quit but decided to involve Life Plant in the conversation: “Snake Plant, your statements pity Ms. Life Plant. Her name sounds nice but unlike us, she has to be in a lot of light.” Life Plant took a deep breath and slowly answered: “Absolutely, we need light. If our owners provide us with direct sunlight and sufficient water, we will grow stronger as we are named. Moreover, we can help air flow freely, making a dry and comfortable space.”
Listening to the argument among plants below, a pot of Ivy rocking from above said: “Everybody seems to buzz first thing in the morning. We – Ivy – are also considered “best air purifiers”. Within only 6 hours, we can remove 58% of fungus particles and 60% of poisonous particles in the air, believe it or not? We are extremely effective in purifying the air and cooling the living space. We are easily grown with little care. The boss said that our slimness and softness make us suitable for indoor decoration. I feel so much happy with this feature. What do you think?”
Ivy’s bragging attracted Pothos’ attention: “It is not only Ivy that has full of charm but also our Pothos that is lightweight, strong, can grow in pot or in water. We can help purify the air indoors, absorb radiant rays sent out from computers, TV or printers …”
Pachira Aquatica tried to make fun of Ivy and Pothos’ boast: “Apparently, Ivy and Pothos are inferring that hard bonsai like Cedarwood occupied space and convinced no buyers.” Being called, Cedarwood raised his voice against his will: “Our name does not sound so nice as that of Pachira Aquatica, Aroid Palm, Lucky Bamboo or Life Plant. Our shape does not look so artistic as that of Parlor Palm, not so slim and charming as that of Ivy and Pothos. We do not seem so talented as Snake Plant. We are just small-in-size bonsai for home decoration. If favored by the owner, grown in shade and often watered, we try to help freshen the air, provide humidity, remove dirt, ease the owner’s headache and migraine.”
When the ”Word War” of green plants seemed to reach no end, a breath of wind blew a Laurel pot sleeping at the door, spreading delicate fragrance to comfort everyone in the shop and defuse the tension. Laurel is a bush which stays green through the year, has fragrance, originates from the Mediterranean, grows well in humid and shady area. Laurel has long been considered the symbol of “glory and victory”. They can absorb humidity in the air, creating an open space.
While everyone was dreamily enjoying the Laurel’s fragrance, the boss welcomed a beautiful customer. The boss proudly introduced each of the plants. The customer was all eyes on each plant. How adorable she was when looking at us with delight for the eyes and a nice smile. We hoped that one of us would be picked and brought home. In conclusion, a little plant only wishes to live a green meaningful life. No matter what our purposes are to purify the air, to beautify the space, to produce oxygen, to be good feng shui, we are to serve human life. And I am Fern – the storyteller of “the debate of the plants”. I am also considered “an effective air purifier”. Some research mentioned that I can remove harmful elements such as mercury and asen. In case you want to pick a plant for your home, please don’t forget me.
